Rodney Stoke and St Leonard's Church

A Brief Tour and Short History

Churchyard Monuments

The churchyard contains two listed monuments, a Grade II* chest tomb and a recently identified Grade II grave slab.

The Grade II* chest tomb, above, dates back to the 15th century, and may be associated with a member of the Rodney Family. Our planned conservation activities may help with its identification

The second is a grave slab, currently just propped up against the churchyard wall. It was listed as a Grade II monument as recently as June 2010, and is of considerable age and historical significance. It is thought to date back to the 12th or 13th century, and to have covered a double burial. There is no text on the stone, but it does show two incised crosses of different styles. Such double grave slabs are extremely rare.
